Abstract

In September 1219 thirteen of the most important castellans of the patriarchate of Aquileia swore loyalty to the municipality of Treviso, and pledged to open their castles and pay an annual tax. The article studies the relationships between the families involved in this initiative, and in particular the leadership of the Caporiacco family. The analysis identifies the reasons for the agreement: the preservation of the power of the ‘free’ lords against the vassal-beneficial relations in the Church of Aquileia. In these years, in fact, the Patriarchs began to recognise new collaborators, the ministerials, who obtained important fiefs. The contrast between the ‘free’ lords and the project of spreading feudal relations led to a greater centralisation of power and new situations of conflict mentioned in the article.
