Abstract

Bernardo Alighieri, the illegitimate son of Pietro di Dante, entered the environment of the Verona cathedral chapter thanks to its archpriest Carlotto Alberti, a pro-Scala member of one of the Florentine exile families in the Veneto. Bernardo was a notary imperiali auctoritate, and from 1386 to 1409 acted as scribe for the chapter. He therefore recorded not only acts concerning the chapter but also the city of Verona’s fluctuating destiny from the end of Scala lordship (1387), through Visconti domination (1387-1404) to the start of Venetian control (1405).
