The purpose of these pages is to present the first results and the considerations of a research about taxation and customs duty on goods in the territory of Belluno at the end of the XVI century. First, the aim was to conduct an analysis of social and political implications related to these taxation and customs duty, considering Belluno’s case in its own peculiarities. Secondly, this paper will try to highlight trends and tendences of the nobility’s administration of these duties, as nobles were both the social class that held the power of controlling indirect taxation in this district, and the main investors in the tenders. The analysis of this topic, which was seldom addressed in the past, gives the opportunity to determine meaningful aspects of the investors’ environment and about economic and political interests in the autonomous control of taxation and customs duty on behalf of the city.
