The unpublished dispatches of the Venetian rectors of Verona (podestà and captain) to the three Heads of the Council of Ten allow us to investigate the practices of violence, the phenomenon of banditry and the politics of justice by going up the course of the Adige river between the Verona city, its north-western District and, beyond the border with the Holy Roman Empire, the contiguous Trentino-Tyrolean area at the time of the Cretan War (1645-1669).
