The War of Candia was a complex conflict, characterized by historical and geographical peculiarities. Venice adopted extraordinary measures to resist, such as extensive recruitment. This paper aims to analyze the Venetian recruitment model, comparing it with other models in Europe. Consistent with contemporary practices, Venetian recruitment combined involuntary and voluntary methods, with a marked use of mercenaries. A significant number of soldiers were foreigners, and only a minority came from Venetian territories. The Venetian recruitment system was well-organized, with the Venetian Senate playing a central role in managing recruitment, using direct and indirect agents. The Venetian recruitment strategy benefited from a broad network of diplomatic contacts, which ensured the service of troops from various parts of Europe.
