Abstract

A notarial document dating back to 1374 , September 1 (published as an annex) sheds light both on men and events that occurred in Treviso (Pietro da Piombino notary, the trust of the late Domenico da Monigo judge) and on people active in the university milieu of Padua (Pietro da Montecastello da Alessandria, professor of notary; Francesco del fu Giovanni, bedellus and notary). This record refers to a civil sentence of the previous 28 January, which had condemned Pietro da Montecastello (as guarantor of Pietro da Piombino, who later died) to pay a sum to Niccolò (known as Zucchetto), a stationer from Padua. It had been sentenced by Rantolfo d’Alessio, licentiatus in artibus et in iure civili, who was rector of the universitas of the Citramontani students of the Studio (University) of Padua, presumably for a year from the spring/summer of 1373 onwards. This news allows us to recover an unknown element to the profile of Rantolfo, son of Nicoletto d’Alessio da Capodistria (the famous literary notary and chronicler active in the court of the Carraresi signori of Padua), presumably born around to 1348-50, cleric and canon of Aquileia (1369), who died far from Padua, maybe in June or July 1374, in Avignon or neighbourhood.
